#4. Ben-Hur – 3 Hours and 44 Minutes
Another near four-hour epic, William Wyler’s Ben-Hur was a blockbuster of sorts in its day, with celebrated (and still hugely admirable) chariot races acting as a centrepiece of its marketing campaign back in the late fifties. Charlton Heston was always one for scenery-chewing, and he is at his very best here in his iconic and exhausting performance as the title character. As one of three epic films to have won eleven Academy Awards, Ben-Hur is arguably the best all-round picture with two acting wins amongst its technical achievements, a feat which neither Titanic nor The Return of the King can match.
