#4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $1,017,003,568
This one didn’t do itself any favours by essentially looking like a blatant cash-in on the original Lord of the Rings trilogy before it was even released. By splitting one three-hundred page book into three epic films, the end result really needed to establish that the decision was made for the better of the material. This was not the case. The fact that Peter Jackson returned to direct this made it all the more disappointing for me. An Unexpected Journey is not a terrible film by any means, but still a huge step backwards compared to the standards set by its predecessors/sequels.
